Mia Van Vlack: “All I Want Is You” by Barry Louis Polisar

Mia Van Vlack:

All I Want is You

By Barry Louis Polisar

If I was a flower growing wild and free

All I’d want is you to be my sweet honey bee

And if I was a tree growing tall and green

All I’d want is you to shade me and be my leaves

All I want is you, will you be my bride

Take me by the hand and stand by my side

All I want is you, will you stay with me?

Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea

If you were a river in the mountains tall

The rumble of your water would be my call

If you were the winter, I know I’d be the snow

Just as long as you were with me, let the cold winds blow

All I want is you, will you be my bride

Take me by the hand and stand by my side

All I want is you, will you stay with me?

Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea

If you were a wink, I’d be a nod

If you were a seed, well I’d be a pod

If you were the floor, I’d wanna be the rug

And if you were a kiss, I know I’d be a hug

All I want is you, will you be my bride

Take me by the hand and stand by my side

All I want is you, will you stay with me?

Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea

If you were the wood, I’d be the fire

If you were the love, I’d be the desire

If you were a castle, I’d be your moat

And if you were an ocean, I’d learn to float

All I want is you, will you be my bride

Take me by the hand and stand by my side

All I want is you, will you stay with me?

Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea

This is a song that my parents used to play for me all the time when I was a kid. I remember absolutely loving it, I hadn’t heard it in a few years and then just last week I heard it on the radio and suddenly I was filled with joy. It was just what I needed to hear at the moment and I’ve listened to it many times since that day. One thing that I feel like a lot of people, myself included are struggling with currently is the fact that our human connections are changing. Some feel like because they can’t  see face to face that those bonds and connections are breaking or not as strong. I was feeling this way until I heard this song and really connected to it. This song reminded me that our connections with others are so much deeper than superficial face to face conversations. This song has a very determined tone to it, it never waivers. The person singing is so sure of this other person they are willing to do anything to be with them “If you were the wood, I’d be the fire, If you were the love, I’d be the desire If you were a castle, I’d be your moat, And if you were an ocean, I’d learn to float.” This is only one stanza but this tone is carried throughout. The speaker is determined and unrelenting. They will do anything as long as they can be with the other person. This reminded me that certain bonds are so strong, that no matter what they will stay. We might have to adapt to the circumstances just like the speaker of the song has to, but that they will be there no matter what is going on or what is happening those bonds will still be there. These bonds are just too strong to be broken by simple things like not being able to see each other face to face. We just need to adapt. The metaphor in the chorus “Hold me in your arms and sway me like a sea” reminds me that this is not going to last forever. We will be able to have those physical connections again. The swaying like a sea makes me consider that a sea is everlasting; it is always swaying back and forth without stopping. This is something we will have again; it won’t just stop. It is everlasting so when this is all over the physical connections will still be there and that brings me hope, they are everlasting just like a sea.
